Garage Sales

The Town of Addison has worked diligently to continue the tradition of the annual citywide garage sale.  The greatest challenge, in recent years, has been location and accessibility for the vendors and patrons, and declining participation. To make the event more convenient for the vendors and patrons, maintain the tradition of the garage sale and respect the Town Ordinances, the Town of Addison is taking a new approach to the Annual Citywide Garage Sale.

The Development & Neighborhood Services Department, will select a weekend for the event and in collaboration with the Town’s Marketing Department will provide the following for residents wishing to participate in the annual citywide event.

1. Advertising on various forms of media to include electronic billboards in the Town of Addison.
2. A GIS map of addresses and hours of sale which can be downloaded or viewed online.
3. Each location will display a brief description (10 words or less) of items for sale.

Residents will be responsible for the following:

1.  Residents wishing to have their garage sale advertised by the Town may register their address as a garage sale site with the Town of Addison Development & Neighborhood Services Department by the designated deadline. Registration is voluntary.
2. Residents wishing to participate in the annual citywide garage sale will sell from their residence.
3. Residents will need to be in compliance with the Town sign ordinance.

Residents in Apartments and Condominiums

1. Obtain permission and location from your apartment /condominium management prior to registering for the garage sale.
2. The sale may be in a common area of the complex easily accessible to the public.

Schools, and residential estate sales are allowed to register for a garage sale. This event does NOT include commercial establishments, car washes, or flea market sales. 

All items should be in good taste for family viewing.

It is believed that this approach will provide residents and patrons with flexibility, accessibility and  does not limit the amount of space per vendor.  We look forward to working with residents to make this new approach a successful new Annual Citywide Garage Sale. 

Addison does not require a permit for garage sales and does not limit the number of sales residents can have in a year. However, we do strictly limit the placement of signs for garage sales.

• Single-family or duplex residential premises may display one detached, non-illuminated sign which may advertise a garage sale on the premises or refer to the sale or lease of the premises. The sign shall not exceed three square feet. All detached special purpose signs must conform to all the restrictions set forth in this chapter. Except as provided in section 62-247, all political signs must comply with the provisions set forth in this chapter.
• Residents are not allowed to place garage sale signs at the entrance to subdivisions, on light or power poles, or in any public rights-of-way
